Day18 #aracecaraday is the 2001 Benetton B201. This car was a shock after driving the well balanced Williams the previous year. I was slow and couldn’t work out how to drive faster, I was overdriving thinking my talent could compensate for a bad car but it couldn’t, the reason for me being slow wasn’t down to speed it was down to not having a clue how to set up a car. I spent a lot of time in 2001 with my engineers & technical director Mike Gascoigne who was bloody tough but just what I needed. The team were also trying the 110degree Cylinder bank angle engine (a normal F1 engine was 90degrees) to bring the centre of gravity down, great idea in theory but it was underpowered and unreliable.
