The ASUC Senate passed a resolution Wednesday in support of the decriminalization of animal rescue as UC Berkeley student activist Zoe Rosenberg is facing criminal charges for the removal of chickens from Perdue’s Petaluma Poultry.
The resolution draws from California Penal Code Section 597(b) and the passage of Proposition 12 and urges the Sonoma County District Attorney’s office to devote its resources to prosecuting potential violations of the law by Sonoma County commercial animal operations rather than Rosenberg.
“The Associated Students of the University of California has recognized that nonhuman animals are sentient beings,” the resolution reads. “The act of investigating conditions of commercial animal operations and exposing abuses to the public and law enforcement is in the interests of both those individual animals and the public that cares about them.”
