September is Food Safety Month - a great time to freshen up our knowledge of food safety. Chemical contamination occurs when chemicals get into food. Here are 3 ways to reduce the risk at home: šŸ‘‰ When cleaning food preparation surfaces, glassware, dishes or cutlery, don't use too much detergent or sanitizer. Always rinse thoroughly. šŸ‘‰ Use hot, soapy water to wash cutting boards, dishes, utensils, and countertops. šŸ‘‰ Fruits and vegetables should be rinsed under running water before eating or cooking, and uncut, firm produce should be scrubbed with a clean brush. There are also other chemical-free ways to improve food safety in food production. Researchers at Virginia Tech found that the use of nanobubbles disrupts microbial biofilms and effectively eliminates microbes on plastic and stainless steel surfaces used to handle food within five minutes.
