In a league with 170+ NBA alumni, you could make a case that Anthony Mason was the biggest star of them all. A major contributor on the 1994 Knicks, Mason helped lead them to the 1994 NBA finals. The team would fall short in Game 7, but Mase got right back in the gym and would win his first JSBL championship weeks later against a loaded Allenhurst Barbers roster featuring 4 NBA players including Bobby Hurley and Donyell Marshall. He would win another JSBL title in 1996 leading RKE Athletic to the first undefeated season in league history. Many NBA players treat summer leagues as a place to get a workout or simply try to score a bunch of points. Mase was a rare exception playing every JSBL game with the primary goal to win just as he would in the NBA. We are saddened that he is no longer with us and that we could not spend 1 more day with him down at the Jersey Shore, but are grateful that we were able to meet his son, Antoine Mason who received the “55” honor on his behalf.
