🍃 HISTORY OF THE BARONG TAGALOG 🍃 With so much to celebrate this month we are here to highlight Filipino formalwear - the barong is a lightweight, stunning garment with an incredibly resilient history rooted in resistance, craftsmanship and elegance. More than four centuries ago, wearers of the first barong trace back to the pre-colonial era. The root word of barong is the Tagalog word “baro”, meaning “outfit” or “clothing”. Made from natural fibers like abaca, pina, or jusi, the barong persisted as a popular choice among Filipino men 🎩⚡️ Filipino culture + way of life is founded on resistance with the barong originating from the Spanish colonial rule when Filipinos were forced to wear see-through clothing to deter them from hiding weapons due to fear of retaliation.
