Today is Older Adults Mental Health Awareness Day!
As someone luckily raised by grandparents who weren’t avoidant of the mental health system, I luckily had access to therapy as early as 6 years old.
Growing up, I definitely recall traits about my great grandma Mozelle that were likely learned behavior from the traumatic experiences she faced as a result of growing up poor in the south to a family of over 10 kids (not all the children survived).
Some indicators of trauma were:
•She hoarded an unnecessary amount of clothes, food, and drink
•She STAYED shopping, likely as a way to self-soothe (peep the Costco pic 🤣)
•She was passive in the sense that she allowed folks to continually mistreat her that she should’ve BEEN cut off
While her trauma doesn’t negate her strength and what she brought to this world, I take these lessons from my experience with her and I know she is serving our God in heaven as you read this! 🫶🏾
