Have you been to our new Seeing America 18th and 19th Century galleries yet? We recently installed 13 contemporary artworks in dialogue with our historical American Art collection to highlight slavery and Black history. Adebunmi Gbadebo’s (adebooms) True Blue, 18th Hole' confronts the erasure of Black history and pays tribute to the enslaved individuals who toiled on True Blue Plantation in Pawley's Island, Georgia—now transformed into a golf course. On land that was formerly a plantation, the history of slavery is absent. Gbadebo uses human hair from people of the African diaspora to center African American history. Through a captivating blend of indigo and rice paper, Gbadebo ingeniously references the industries that generated immense wealth for the plantations.
