May 5 is recognized as the National Day of Awareness for Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women and Girls (MMIWG). According to the US Department of Veterans Affairs, an estimated four out of five Native women experience violence in their lifetime. They also face murder rates that are 10 times higher than the national average. Many organizations, like projectnativehope, raise awareness of this overwhelming issue by wearing red, organizing marches/rallies, and fighting against the injustice of what’s happening to Native women every day.
