The Holocaust is most widely marked by International Holocaust Remembrance Day, commemorating the day we were liberated from Nazi concentration camps. In contrast, Yom HaShoah is the day marked by Jews and by Israel. It is the day of the Warsaw Ghetto Uprising; the day WE fought back. The Warsaw Ghetto Uprising began after German troops entered the Warsaw Ghetto to deport its surviving inhabitants. It was the largest uprising by Jews in WWII, led by 24-year-old Mordecai Anielewicz. Today, we honor those lost in the uprising and the six million lost in the Holocaust, as well as those lost during October 7th. Let this day not only be a commemoration, but also a reminder of our continued resilience through expulsions, pogroms, and antisemitism. Am Yisrael Chai, then, now, and forever.
