Now synonymous with Argentina, malbec originated as a blending grape in France and now grows in the higher altitudes of Argentina - in particular the province of Mendoza.
During our time in Mendoza, we not only enjoyed a glass or two of this velvety drink, but we studied the wine industry, it’s contributions to the country, and the hardships it’s facing in Argentina’s current economic climate.
From our visits to the National Institute for Vitiviniculture and a local but foreign owned winery, Casarena, we learned that Argentina exports the majority of their premium wines but the transportation costs out of Mendoza are outrageous!
