When marvynharrison sent a WhatsApp message to his fellow Black dads on Father's Day in 2018 to express how much he appreciated them, and the work they did as fathers, he never imagined what that simple gesture would become. An immediate bond and brotherhood formed over their shared experiences as fathers, including their successes, failures, and praises for one another. That WhatsApp group became a community of dopeblackdads where fathers could support and speak on “the pitfalls and joys of Black fatherhood and masculinity in a society that often overlooked, stereotyped and negated their experiences.” The need for this digital safe space was clear. Since forming dopeblackdads the community has evolved into a full-fledged network, including a series of active Facebook Groups, with communities dedicated to mothers, soon-to-be Black parents and the LGBTQ+ community.
