Several years of research and planning were realized today at the dedication of Jewell’s Freedom Walk. The memorial is one way the Racial Reconciliation Commission is telling a fuller and more accurate history of the College. Four bronze plaques throughout the Quad focus on distinct periods in College history, addressing the contributions of enslaved persons in the founding and growth of Jewell and the integration of African Americans in the student body. More than 100 people are named on the plaques, and some of their descendants joined us today.
