Maurice Walton Tate (right) was one of the first Black nurses at St. Jude on opening day. She used her 20 years of nursing experience to pioneer sickle cell disease research and visited surrounding communities to administer medication, draw blood and dress ulcers resulting from the disease. She was driven by the loss of her daughter who died before she began researching at St. Jude from cerebral thrombosis due to sickle cell disease.
Mrs. Tate is an inspiration and her children hope her story will inspire nurses everywhere to be leaders in their communities.
