A South Nashville native, Eva Bowman was the first Black inspector and examiner of cosmetology for the State of Tennessee. Bowman trained for cosmetology at Madam C.J. Walker’s Lelia College in Indianapolis, IN. As a businesswoman, she was the owner of Bowman Beauty and Barber College. In 1946, she introduced the “fantastic curl,” a cooling curling method to be used without heat or grease. Bowman was also the first Black woman to run for a seat in the Tennessee House of Representatives in the Democratic Primary Election in 1962. She was very active in her community and instrumental in beautifying South Nashville, resulting in the building of Rose Park and the Easley Center.
