Black History fact: Howard Gentry Sr. served as an instructor, coach, and an administrator from 1949 to 1976. During his time as football coach, the team held a 24-game winning streak, making many players eligible to be drafted in the NFL. TSU athletics enjoyed a “golden era” of progress during his tenure as athletic director, which included a postseason football bowl game against a NCAA-affiliate team and conference championships. In 1980, the Howard Gentry Complex was constructed serving as a facility for health, physical education, and athletics. (Credit: TSU Library Digital Collections Archives)
