In British Columbia's Great Bear Rainforest, photographer @paulnicklen captured this spirit, or kermode, bear hunting at the edge of a stream. The bears carry a recessive gene—inherited from their black bear parents—that gives them white fur. For centuries, First Nations like the Gitga’at and Kitasoo/Xai’xais have kept these rare animals a secret, notes Nicklen; guarding their existence even through the height of the region's fur trade. "Thanks to the tireless advocacy of people like Marven Robinson and Douglas Neasloss," says Nicklen, "the bears continue to roam beneath the sanctuary of the Great Bear's misty canopies."
