Rebecca Campbell⁠ Beautiful Boy, 2019⁠ Oil on board⁠ ⁠ Rebecca Campbell’s recent paintings are based on found photographs of family members, both known and estranged, in attempts to process her strict, religious upbringing. The work’s title, Beautiful Boy, references Andy Warhol’s 1962-1964 project, The Thirteen Most Beautiful Boys, which began as a parody of the New York Police Department’s “Thirteen Most Wanted” campaign. Warhol’s images of handsome youths suggested beauty to be the most sought-after of human attributes, a direct contrast with the NYPD’s mugshots of the “least desirable” members of society.
