“Every man of humane convictions must decide on the protest that best suits his convictions, but we must all protest.” -Martin Luther King Jr.⁠ ⁠ Sengalese photographer Omar Victor Diop’s series, Liberty, aims to define moments of Black protest around the world. African societies, and that of the diaspora, were forever changed by the slave trade, colonialism, and ongoing struggles of those decades-long structures. In Selma, 1965, a group of Black men are adorned with white flowers in remembrance of the sacrifices of American Civil Rights protesters. The figure facing forward is the artist himself, imbedding his experiences within the context of a historic era of racial and social movements that continue today.
