Inspired by 20th-century motion pictures, Girbent’s black and white paintings are single image frames isolated from their original context. “The image is and is not the same,” the artist explains, “it’s as if it were endowed with a second life.” Transferred from one medium to another, and altered in both meaning and form, the ghosts of the two-dimensional world of film gain a sensual presence in Girbent’s paintings. In an age when images circulate through the internet more quickly than through any other medium, the act of painting stands in resistance to the constant digital flow. Pictured: Girbent, The dance III, 2019, Oil on aluminum #painting #contemporaryart #21cartist #Girbent#sharethelex #visitlex
