Managing Type 1 Diabetes (T1D) has not always been easy in a high intensity sport like racing. I’ve been living with T1D for 14 years and I’m still learning every day how to better manage. It’s a full time balancing act. Diabetes affects every part of the body and blood sugar control is dependent on so many factors including environment, stress and hormones.
What some people don’t know is that Type 1 Diabetes is an autoimmune disease that is neither preventable nor a lifestyle problem. It’s not easily noticed, in fact, some of you may not of known I had T1D before this. In honor of World Diabetes Day I’m wearing blue and posting three photos that represent my everyday:
Photo 1: A picture of me checking my blood sugar. I do this 3-4 times a day, by pricking my finger to draw blood.
Photo 2: A photo of me after Watkins Glen. The high heat that day sent me low resulting in weakness and shakes at the end of my stint.
