“In the morning when we rise, give us freedom .. “ Hector Gitego ’25 read the poem “Mourning Until Morning” by Jillian Hanesworth during today’s morning announcements as we remembered the victims of the racist mass shooting in Buffalo that occurred two years ago. Director of Campus Ministry Fr. Chuck Frederico, S.J., led the morning prayer, which included the reading of the names of the victims of the May 14, 2022 shooting: Celestine Chaney, Roberta A. Drury, Andre Mackneil, Katherine Massey, Margus D. Morrison, Heyward Patterson, Aaron Salter, Geraldine Talley, Ruth Whitfield, Pearl Young. poet_jillian_hanesworth, a spoken word artist and community activist, was Buffalo’s first Poet Laureate and is now Poet Laureate Emeritus. Her work, including “Mourning Until Morning,” is on display as part of the exhibition “Before and After Again” at buffaloakgartmuseum. Jacob Hanesworth ’22 is her brother.
