So many parks, so many birthdays! Happy birthday SanJuanIslandNHP (which we def knew was in Washington state btw)! Have you heard of the San Juan Island Pig War🐖? In the 1850s, there was a dispute over whether San Juan Island, which resided on the 49th parallel, belonged to the U.S. or Britain, as Canada was not yet a country. By the late 1850s, several British businesses operated on the island, but 18 Americans had also claimed land on San Juan. Things came to a head in June 1859 when the American Lyman Cutlar killed a British company’s pig. The British threatened to evict the Americans, and the Americans sent an army infantry in response. Over the next few months, more troops arrived on both sides until President Buchanan heard about the situation and sent a general to resolve the conflict before an all-out war began.
