When in Rome…. NY, visit an American Revolution-era fort!
While fort.stanwix.nps is actually just a reconstruction, the original timber fort stood from 1758 to 1781. Although it was originally built by the British, it was taken over by early American forces. In August of 1777, it was given the nickname “The Fort That Never Surrendered” when the Americans refused to give up the fort after a long siege by the British forces. In 1781, the Americans withdrew for the last time, and the fort shortly fell into disrepair because of flooding and fire.
A few years later, the fort made history again when the newly formed United States government met with the Six Nations Confederacy to sign peace treaties!
