Meet Dr. Margaret "Mom" Chung, the first Chinese American woman physician. Her legacy is part of the Presidio of San Francisco's unique history as a park and former army station. Dr. Chung was born in 1889 in Santa Barbara, California, to Chinese immigrant parents. Despite facing skepticism and rumors due to her "outsider" status as a young, single female doctor who dressed in masculine clothing, Dr. Chung founded one of the first Western medical clinics in San Francisco's Chinatown in the 1920s. During World War II, Dr. Chung became famous for her widespread network of "adopted sons," mostly American servicemen who called her "Mom" and visited her home in San Francisco for weekly dinners.
