Meet the Ellis Island of the west coast: Angel Island. Contrary to its name, the U.S. Immigration Station, located in Angel Island State Park, was not always a blessing. At the start of Asian American and Pacific Island Heritage Month, we’d like to pay homage to the place where thousands of immigrants from Asia came to the U.S., for better or worse. While many passed through this National Historic Landmark and started living their American Dream, thousands of people, such as Japanese and Chinese, were detained on the island for various legal reasons. Eventually closed, the Angel Island Immigration Station reminds us of our country’s complicated history with immigration and creates a dialogue about the intersection of race and the American Dream. #AsianAmerican #PacificIslanders #AAPI #HeritageMonth #AngelIsland #California #Japan #China #EllisIsland #Immigration 📸: Wikicommons Image: Angel Island as viewed from the San Francisco Bay with boats in the water.
