#OnThisDay 110 years ago, thousands of women gathered in Washington, D.C. to call for a constitutional amendment guaranteeing women the right to vote. Atop her horse, Grand Marshal Jane Burleson led the Women’s Suffrage Parade of 1913. This was not only the the first major national event for the women’s suffrage movement but also the first-ever civil rights march in Washington, D.C. The parade was an all-inclusive, dramatic event: African-American women marched alongside their white peers, wagons were displayed with banners demanding an amendment to the Constitution, and the rally evolved into a near-riot of passionate protest.
