You’ve heard of the Witness Protection Program, but have you heard of the Witness TREE Protection Program? It’s in-tree-guing. 🌲🌳 It sounds a little crazy, but these trees have experienced important events in American history and remain part of our collective legacy. In 2006, the Witness Tree Protection Program was created to identify and document these significant trees in the greater Washington, DC, area. For example, the White Mulberry tree pictured above has been growing in that spot since the early 1900s. Its position on the National Mall means it has witnessed events such as the historic 1963 March on Washington and Martin Luther King Jr.’s “I Have a Dream” speech.
