After this day, freed African Americans celebrated "Emancipation Day" which has turned into the federal holiday now known as Juneteenth.
#FunFact: When Juneteenth became a federal holiday in 2021, it was the first new federal holiday since Martin Luther King Jr. Day was adopted in 1983.
