“Coucher de soleil (Sunset)” is a stunning oil on canvas piece created by Camille Wauters (1856–1919). To quote Jeffery Howe, a Professor Emeritus in the Art History Department at Boston College: “Belgian landscape painters’ focus on the effects of light engendered local varieties of impressionism, and Wauters’s Sunset is a fine example. It exemplifies his mastery of subtle color and has all the freshness of a quick sketch executed on the spot, but with a solid composition.” This piece was gifted to the McMullen as part of a larger donation from Charles Hack and the Hearn Family Trust. #TheMcMullen
