alisonmdesir has a knack for connecting with others. In 2013, she used her talent to start harlemrun, a well-established collective of runners who are passionate about empowerment for social change. In 2016, she organized run4allwomen, a run from Harlem to Washington D.C. ahead of the Women’s March. In October, Désir will release her first book “Running While Black”.
It’s often said that running is the easiest sport to start and that runners are a welcoming bunch, creating bonds over shared miles that form lifetime friendships. But for some, the running community hasn’t always felt so welcoming. “Running While Black” tells the story of what Désir’s experience has been like with running, and what other Black and Brown people have experienced.
“I felt like I had to share my story of what it feels like to be part of this sport that everyone says is so accessible and non-judgmental,” says Désir.
