A seemingly harmless comment at the time has come back to bite Tim Cook amid the DOJ's latest Apple lawsuit.
As part of the 88-page antitrust suit against the tech giant, the DOJ included a quote from Cook in their complaint that came as he answered a question during the 2022 Code Conference.
A member of the audience had asked the Apple CEO about how it planned to resolve messaging issues between iPhone and Android users. They went on to cite their own frustrations trying to communicate with their mom over text, to which Cook jokingly replied, "Buy your mom an iPhone."
While it may come across innocently enough on video, for the DOJ it's a prime example of Apple leaderships' mindset as it tries to claim that the company created a monopoly through its marquee product.
