We were a little nervous because an unforecasted, severe thunderstorm had just hit the area, and we didn’t want to get caught in another storm in the middle of a lake in a metal canoe. But the skies looked to be clearing up so we made the decision to push off, with little to no visibility on the water, and only the stars and our headlamps as light. After a few miles in, we realized the best way to see was to turn off our headlights and let the stars guide way—It had been a while since I’d seen the stars and Milky Way so clearly and it was definitely a welcome sight.
