A career in policing may not have been top pick for former Echuca high school teacher, Senior Constable Toby Gilmour, but since his first day at the Police Academy in 2014, he hasn’t looked back. After coming to the realisation that teaching wasn’t for him, Toby set sail to work onboard superyachts, traveling to destinations such as the Mediterranean, Caribbean, and the Bahamas. But once back on dry land, Toby had a career decision to make. Keen to learn more about the role he was interested in but admittedly “not completely sold on”, Toby reached out to members and police veterans to hear about their experiences. Nearly 10 years since joining, Toby has worked across large-scale natural disasters and emergencies such as the 2019 bushfires and 2022 floods.
