Did you spot the unique umpire shirts at the footy over the last two rounds? Victoria Police Senior Constable Joshua James designed this year’s umpire shirt for the afl Sir Doug Nicholls Round celebrating the contributions of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders to Australian Football. As a proud Noongar Wardandi man from Western Australia, Joshua was honoured to design the shirt and umpire boots, taking inspiration from his country and his mob’s dreamtime. The design, called ‘Moorditj Koondarm’, means ‘strong dreams’ in the Noongar Wardandi language. Joshua wanted to showcase the strength, resilience and determination of Indigenous people, and celebrate unity regardless of differences in skin colour, religion, language, and gender. “To me this is a very significant moment in my life that I am extremely proud of. To share my culture, dreamtime, knowledge, and create awareness for my culture to showcase how strong us Aboriginal people are, means the world to me.” Outsid...
