When you say the r word it hurts my heart. People who I think are awesome will say that word sometimes in front of me. Their explanation is that it’s just a word. Oh, they also add that they would never call Samantha that. My first thought is I’m pretty sure I can come up with another “just a word” and say it about someone you love and you will have a better idea of what I mean. I only do that if they still don’t understand me when I show them a photo of this beauty and explain: every time you say that word, you are encouraging and normalizing some one else to say that word. It will eventually get back to my amazing kid (or someone just like her). Trust me on this. If someone ever tells you that a word is disrespectful, hurtful, or mean, don’t use that word. Ever.
