Did you know that our Keepers’ House at the St. Augustine Light Station caught on fire in 1970? These two photos showcase the difference almost a century apart. The first picture, taken in 1886, displays a group of tourists standing by the Light Station’s north brick wall. The second picture, taken in 1980, ten years after the unfortunate incident, shows the same house and courtyard from a similar angle. However, many changes are visible, most noticeably the damages resulting from the fire. Despite the damages, the Lighthouse Keepers’ House still stands today, being one of the oldest buildings on Anastasia Island, thanks to the efforts of the Junior Service League of St. Augustine. Whenever you visit, you can stand alongside the north brick wall and witness the Keeper’s House just like the tourists from 1886.
