Racism, capitalism and climate destruction are interlinked systemic problems at the heart of American society. Our new report Fossil Fuel Racism report maps out the disproportionately harmful effects the coal, oil, and gas production industries have on Black, Brown, Indigenous and poor communities. The study reveals the ways public health hazards from air and water pollution, and risks associated with climate change, fall disproportionately on “Sacrifice zones” where Black, Brown, and Indigenous peoples live. This issue is part of every stage of fossil fuel production. Oil, gas and coal corporations depend on and contribute to the legacy of systemic racism in the United States for profit and devastate our ecosystem in the process. We call for a managed phase out of fossil fuel production and the enactment of wider programs of social, economic, and democratic reforms via a Green New Deal.
