"Hello, we are Dr. Breen's summer research team! With funding from the Rhode Island IDeA Network of Biomedical Research Excellence (riinbre), we are developing methods of detecting phosphate and nitrite ions in water. We use instruments to measure how much the different dyes change color, or fluoresce, when varied amounts of the ions are present. These ions can cause an overgrowth of algae, damaging the ecosystem. Our overall goal is to test our dyes on seawater from Narragansett Bay."
