The Santa Marta Sabrewing had not had a documented sighting since 2010, but since it was unexpectedly rediscovered by researchers in 2022, they have been able to learn more about this mysterious species. A team has been working with local Indigenous communities and found a population of this hummingbird in the Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta, a mountain range in Colombia. My organization rewild and their partners selvaorgco, unaloficial, procatcolombia, americanbirdconservancy, and world_parrot_trust have released new findings about the geographic distribution, local abundance, behavior, and ecology of this mysterious hummingbird. They are also working with local and Indigenous communities to design effective conservation strategies for the species.
