I grew up in a small Norwegian town in Wisconsin and I have such great memories of celebrating Syttende Mai (Norwegian Constitution Day) on May 17 every year. We marched in a parade with our Norwegian flags, donned our traditional dresses, ate krumkakes and lefse (look them up) and avoided trolls (people dressed up as those creatures from Nordic folklore, not the online kind ๐).
There was Norwegian dancing and the Syttende Mai marathon. Small businesses came out to support the town, march in the parade and sell their wares such as beautiful rosemaling and quilting and when I think back on it, this was my first experience with small businesses and how they are the backbone of our communities. Enjoy this stroll through (my) memory lane from years past on this day. Glad dag!
