#TakeActionTuesday: May is both National Physical Fitness & Sports Month and Mental Health Awareness Month. As we know, physical activity can benefit your mental health by boosting your mood, sharpening your focus, reducing your stress, and improving your sleep. WSF’s latest research report, “Thriving Through Sport: The Transformative Impact on Girls’ Mental Health” found that sports participation can help lower anxiety and depression.
- 29% of girls who never played sports have moderate-to-high levels of depression symptoms vs. 17% of girls who currently play.
- 21% of girls who never played sports have moderate-to-high levels of anxiety symptoms vs. 11% of girls who currently play.
When girls are physically active and participate in a safe and inclusive environment, our research shows that their mental health improves. There are so many ways to be active – walking, dancing, swimming, playing organized sports and much more!
