Did you know that a lot of stereotypes -- like how Russians love vodka and how the Irish love Whiskey -- actually have a richer and more deeply complicated history than that? Gastropod podcast did an episode called, "You're Wrong about Prohibition," which explains little-talked-about histories, like how vodka was actually used as a way for the Russian Czar to fund his military, or how the English used spirits to fuel colonization. That's not to say that the Russians don't love their vodka (they do) and the Irish don't love their whiskey (they also do), but it's just one more example of how even the most commonplace ideas about the places you visit have so much more going on behind the scenes.
