Tip #1: Take a Deep dive.
Instead of a multi-city adventure, stay in one place, or at least cut your travel itinerary in half. Staying in a city for a week instead of a few days allows you to explore past the surface, which gives you more time to give back to the community by buying from locally-owned restaurants and shops.
It's not to say you shouldn't travel far and wide, but it is to say that really getting to know where you are, as opposed to getting a brief overview, is a much better experience. (Not to mention, it's better for the travel industry itself.)
