One of the items in our vast Library collection that captures my historical imagination is the Declaration of Independence printed by Baltimore’s own Mary Katharine Goddard, first female postmaster of the United States. Although she is not a signer of the document, Goddard was an official printer to the Continental Congress, which had relocated to Baltimore in December 1776. The imprint at the bottom clearly identifies the city in which the document was printed and her full name: "Baltimore, in Maryland: Printed by Mary Katharine Goddard." A bold and brave move!
