Faith Ringgold 1930 – 2024 We mourn the loss of Faith Ringgold, and celebrate the incredible life and work of a visionary artist and lifelong New Yorker who shaped the fabric of the city. Known for her story quilts, paintings, sculptures, performances, and children’s books, Ringgold’s work spanned mediums and subjects, centered around the depiction of Black life and the agency of women. Through her books, Ringgold introduced many young people to art and the expansive possibilities of a creative imagination. She has been a beacon and a role model for countless artists in generations who have followed in her footsteps. She will be greatly missed. Public Art Fund was fortunate to partner with Ringgold in 1984 for “Banner of Joyful Mysteries,” a work she created for a week of events at the Studio Museum in Harlem.
