The importance of scanning the ice when playing the puck: When Frederick Andersen leaves the net here, he simply steers the puck into the forechecker’s path. If you watch the clip, right at the beginning, you can see the hurricanes weak side defenseman releases to the weak side to become an option. If Andersen simply guides the puck with an indirect pass to the weak side, the hurricanes have puck possession, and this play never happens. Remember, if you are going to play the puck, take pride and creating time and space and making sure your team gets possession of the puck. 2. Battle to find a sightline: if you notice on this play, Andersen chooses to simply butterfly to take up net while staying in a low stance prior to butterflying. The whole time, his head is behind the mass of bodies in front of him. He is not a short goaltender, and considering the play and puck are off to a deeper angle, he does not need to be aggressive...
