Muirfield Village Golf Club is very special to Jack Nicklaus being near his childhood home in Ohio, Muirfield was the dream and work of Nicklaus. With the help of Desmond Muirhead, the land to build Muirfield was acquired in 1966. Nicklaus spent years honing and perfecting the course, construction did not begin until July 28, 1971. On Memorial Day, May 27, 1974, the course was officially dedicated with an exhibition match between Nicklaus and Tom Weiskopf, Nicklaus held the course record of a six-under-par 66 until 1979. On August 11, 1975, the Columbus Pro-Am was the first event held at Muirfield. The first Memorial Tournament was played in May of 1976, which has grown into one of golf's premier tournaments.
