The Tournament Players Club at Sawgrass (TPC at Sawgrass) was established in 1980 Pete and Alice Dye were the designers for the course. When hired to design the course Dye was given two directives; spectator-friendly mounding throughout the facility and to be the most democratic course in the world, testing all aspects of the player's game. There was to have short and long par-3s and par-4s, reachable and unreachable par-5s. Holes needed to bend both left and right and no two holes could head in the same direction. In 1982 when the Tournament Players Championship was first conducted featured names such as Nicklaus, Palmer, Trevino, Miller, Wadkins, and Sutton all missed the cut, 35 Majors won among them. In 2006 Pete Dye was called back to the club to make significant updates due to drainage. The course played five shots harder during dry years than soggy ones. An eight-month, 60-million-dollar renovation began.
