I used to take this as a compliment. Today I pause. Sometimes I have the energy to educate, sometimes I just don't. Most of the time, intentions are good - but what does this statement tell me? Education and awareness is needed. Similar to "You don't look deaf," what is d/Deaf supposed to look or sound like?? Sure - many of us who grew up learning to use spoken language while NOT having optimal access to language (visual and/or auditory) may not be able to express the sounds of spoken language clearly or with optimal efficiency. But what about those who have single sided deafness, later deafened, etc. They/we may speak clearly - and we are still deaf/hard of hearing. Someone could have an accent from another country. "You don't sound deaf," makes me stop. Am I supposed to sound deaf? Am I supposed to look deaf? What is your experience? Not all d/Deaf people are the same, even between each ear. Not all zebras look the same do they? Don't mix us all up into one lump. Don't stereotype...
