This week, our team took indigenoustourismbc and thecityofabbotsford on a tour of the territory of the Semá:th and Máthekwi First Nations, as known as Selxwí:chel (Abbotsford). We visited significant historical sites in Máthekwi (Matsqui Regional Park), Teq’qéyex (Sumas Mountain Regional Park), and Semá:th Spélhx̱el (Sumas Prairie).
We met with Semá:th First Nations as well to discuss the future of Indigenous tourism in the area and learn more about the rich history stemming from Semá:th Xo:tsa (Sumas Lake) and Stó:lō (Fraser River).
We ended the tour with a visit to ravensbrewing, an Indigenous-owned craft brewery that recently moved their operations to Semá:th First Nations.
We are grateful for these partnerships with the local Indigenous community and with our regional tourism colleagues as we work together to honour and share our local history with everyone who comes to this territory.
